What a repair actually consists of, and when one is worth buying
Most roofs we get called out to do not need everything. They need one thing found, and that one thing done correctly.
The large majority of repairs come off a short list: a cracked plumbing vent boot, step or counterflashing at a wall or chimney, valley metal, ridge cap, a section of creased or blown shingles, and exposed or backed-out fasteners. That handful covers most of the leaks we chase across this metro in a given year.
Shingle matching is the practical constraint nobody warns homeowners about. Product lines get discontinued and colors drift between production runs even when the name on the bundle stays the same. A repair on a twelve-year-old roof will probably be visible from some angle in some light. We say so before we start rather than after, and on a prominent elevation we will sometimes pull donor shingles from a hidden slope and patch that one instead.
Repairs on brittle roofs carry genuine risk. Aged asphalt cracks when it is lifted in cold weather, so pulling one damaged shingle can take its neighbors with it. On a roof past its useful life a repair occasionally creates about as much work as it resolves, which is something we would rather raise beforehand than discover for you on an invoice.
A repair is not a reset. It restores the component that failed; it does not renew the age of everything surrounding it. Repair a valley on an eighteen-year-old roof and what you own afterward is a sound valley on an eighteen-year-old roof, so the useful conversation is about how many more seasons that realistically buys you.
Partial slope work follows a rule of thumb: replace to a break. Shingles come off and go back to a natural termination, a ridge, a hip or a valley, rather than stopping out in open field, because a patch ending mid-slope leaves a seam that telegraphs and eventually lifts.

Our own crews. A repair is where corner-cutting hides most easily, which is exactly why we do not hand it to a subcontractor.
