What hail actually does to a shingle
Hail damage is a specific physical thing with a specific look, and it is not the same as an old roof.
A hailstone striking asphalt does two things. It knocks granules loose and it bruises the mat underneath. The granules are the shingle's sunscreen, so stripping them lets UV start breaking down the asphalt below. The bruise is the real damage: a soft, dark spot where the fiberglass mat has fractured. Press it and it gives slightly, like a bruise on fruit. That shingle has not failed yet, and it will, usually within the next two or three years.
That delay is why so many homeowners miss it entirely. The roof does not leak the week of the storm. It leaks long after the claim has become an awkward conversation.
Genuine hail damage is random in placement and round in shape, and it shows up on the slopes facing where the storm came from. That randomness is how an adjuster separates it from the things that look similar and are not covered: blistering, which is manufacturing or heat related and tends to be evenly distributed; mechanical damage from a contractor's boot; and ordinary end-of-life granule loss, which is heaviest in the water paths and along the drip edge rather than scattered across a slope.
Soft metals are the evidence that settles arguments. Gutters, downspouts, vent caps, the furnace flue and the fins on the air conditioning condenser all dent, and dents date an event. If the soft metals are clean, we are going to be honest with you about what a claim is likely to do. We also look at what surrounds the house, splatter marks on a deck rail, dings in window screens, dents on a mailbox or a grill, because those corroborate a specific storm on a specific date.
Documentation is what makes a claim work. We chalk test squares on each slope, count strikes per square, photograph the squares and the soft metals, and match the findings against the storm record for that address. Then we meet the adjuster on the roof rather than sending paperwork and hoping.
