What genuinely helps before we arrive: move what you can out from underneath, get a container under the drip, and if a ceiling is bulging and you can reach it safely, a small hole at the low point relieves the load and drains it into a bucket instead of letting the water spread across the entire ceiling plane. It feels wrong to put a hole in your own ceiling and it saves the ceiling.
We do not put crews on a roof during lightning, and we will tell you that directly rather than promise something we have no intention of doing. During active electrical storms we work the interior containment side and go up the moment it is survivable to do so.
Tarping done properly is a genuine short-life repair, not a blue sheet with bricks on it. The tarp runs well past the damage on the uphill side so water sheds over it rather than under it, and it gets fastened to structure with furring strips along the edges. A weighted tarp lifts in the next gust, and the next gust is generally the entire point.
Daylight is when the real diagnosis happens. Overnight work is triage by headlamp on a wet roof, and anybody telling you they permanently solved a leak at three in the morning in driving rain is describing something you will be calling about again.
We document as we go, including overnight. If this becomes a claim, photographs of active water intrusion and of the emergency measures taken carry weight, and carriers generally expect a homeowner to have taken reasonable steps to prevent the damage from getting worse.
